Desktop Publishing Gets Classy

By Jessica Marston

The second quarter of Mr. Bickford’s desktop publishing class is when everyone starts to prepare for a photo shoot, which they will be using for their own creations of a magazine cover. From Cosmopolitan to Time magazine, you can choose any magazine to create the new monthly addition.

Mr. Bickford reported, “This project is fun, challenging, interesting and engaging for the students.” He brings in his personal photography equipment and takes really good pictures of each of his students so they have something to work with. The students pick out different poses and spend time taking pictures to find the right one for their cover. “My favorite part is watching the magazine covers develop,” Mr. Bickford states. Next the pictures will be touched up in photoshop and designed with the corrected words on the front.

Most of the students look forward to starting this project. Lots of students hear from earlier classes about the project and then sign up for this class. Emma Geiger is a student taking desktop publishing this semester. She chose Elle magazine for her project. “It took awhile to pick out the right pose, but I think we all will be happy with the final product.” Many students did not realize how long the process is that you have to go through for the actual photo shoot to happen. Geiger said, “There is a lot to consider when planning for a photo shoot!” The students are still working on creating their final magazine covers, and cannot wait to see the end result.
